Welcome!

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2001 IEEE Workshop on Charge-Coupled Devices and Advanced Image Sensors at the Cal-Neva Resort on Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA.  The purpose of the workshop is to discuss recent research results, provide in-depth discussion of common technical issues, and stimulate thinking about new research directions and activities.

I would like to thank Dr. Jaroslav (Jerry) Hynecek, program committee chairman and his committee for putting together an excellent, high quality technical program.  This year we have 56 papers for presentation.  Of these, 25 are from North America, 15˝ from Asia and 15˝ from Europe (where the ˝ represents a collaboration).   And for those that track these things, 40 papers concern CMOS image sensors, 12 CCDs, and 4 some special topic.  All papers will be orally presented.  Some will be presented in longer time slots, some in shorter, and those best presented in poster format will be given 5 min for an oral presentation.  In addition to the contributed papers, there will be our traditional lively discussion session and a reprise presentation on the paper that has been selected for the Walter Kosonocky Award.

As in years past, this workshop was limited in attendance to 120 persons, based on desire of the organizing committee to keep the workshop small and more personal, as well as the practical limitations of the Cal-Neva Resort facilities.  The workshop, also in keeping with tradition, was filled to capacity by mid April.  On behalf of the organizing committee, we apologize to the dozens of additional persons who desired to attend but were unable to due to the rapid filling of the meeting.  We hope to see you next time!

It is amazing that it has been 15 years since the first workshop in this series that was held in 1986 in Harriman New York.  This is now the 8th workshop of the series and the interest in a specialty workshop on image sensors is stronger now than ever before.   I would like to thank my fellow organizing committee members, Albert Theuwissen and Nobukazu Teranishi, for their continued guidance in the planning and organization of the workshops, and I would also like to thank Sayed Eid, Angela McNamee and Sandor Barna for their time and energy to make this workshop a success.  Thanks also to Photobit Corporation, and Photobit Technology Corporation for their support of this year’s efforts.

Best wishes for a great and memorable meeting!

Eric R. Fossum

General Chairman
