CCD pioneer Morley Blouke passed away

On sept. 6th Morley Blouke passed away at the age of 84. Morley was one of those CCD giants with strong shoulders on which we could stand on.

Morley’s life work was in the development of charge coupled devices (CCDs) and he made significant contributions to the field of electronic imaging during his career at Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX), at Tektronix and SITe Inc. (Portland, OR), and finally, at Ball Aerospace (Boulder, CO). Morley’s career in digital imaging began with applications in astronomy. Through his designs and changes to the manufacturing process, he and his team were able to produce the largest CCDs at that time (2048×2048 pixels) and received several awards from NASA. Their devices were used in the Wide Field Planetary Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. The CCDs that were created for NASA were eventually used in more practical applications back on earth. This work culminated in the US Space Technology Hall of Fame award in 1997.
